Easy Summer Skirt Patterns

Well, it took me a while, but it's here at last. Do you remember I wrote a while back about a skirt I wore during the Cayman Islands' first ever sewing meet-up? Robin suggested I should sew a skirt like the one I was wearing, and immediately I knew it was a great idea and got to work. Introducing the Gathered Summer Skirt. Sizing given for sizes 34-52 inch hips, all should fit on less than 1.5 yards of fabric.

Summer is here at last. For some of us, it lasts longer than others, but whether it’s a trip to the beach, a picnic, shopping with the girls, or a day sailing, you’ll still need to look cute and summery.

Uncut

The design for this skirt was copied from a Ready To Wear skirt I already owned and loved. I think it has the perfect ratio of gathers to length and with the elastic waist, is comfy and casual.

This skirt has 3 different tiers, a loose comfy fit, and an elastic waist. Easy and fun to sew and can be made in any size. Not just for the grown-ups, but good for teens too.

You can download the pattern and instructions for the Gathered Summer Skirt from my design account at Payhip. It's a PDF file containing both instructions and pattern sizing all in the same file. Enjoy!

This skirt has a lot of gathering, over long pieces of fabric so do check out the earlier post about how to gather using dental floss – written totally in response to the trouble I was having with this skirt! Make your life easy and gather with dental floss and this skirt will go quickly and smoothly and soon be ready to wear.

Summer is the perfect season to turn those quilting fabrics into a pretty skirt! With just a couple of measurements, you can make this in a wide variety of sizes. It’s easy to make and fun to wear!

1. You will need cotton fabric and 1” wide elastic. To determine the amount of fabric, measure your hips and add 12”. Divide that number by 36 and that will equal the number of yards you’ll need.

How To Make An Elastic Waistband Skirt

For example, let’s say my hips measure 40”. Add 40+12 to get 52”. Divide 52 by 36, and you’re left with 1.44 yards. Round that up to 1 ½ yards of fabric.

2. Prewash your fabric so your skirt doesn’t shrink later. Divide your hips-plus-12” measurement in half (in my example above, that comes out to 26”). Fold your fabric with the selvages together. Cut two pieces of fabric perpendicular to the selvage that are that width.

3. Determine the length you’d like for your finished skirt. I used 21”. Add 2 ½”, so for me that was 23 ½”. Cut your two rectangles to that length, cutting off from the selvage edge.

4. Pin the two rectangles with right sides together. Stitch down both sides (for me, the 23 ½” sides) with a ½” seam to create a tube.

5. Zigzag stitch over the edge of the seam or cut it with pinking shears so it won’t fray. Press the seams to one side.

8. Stitch close to the inner fold, leaving 1 ½” open to insert he elastic. Feed the elastic into the casing by pinning a large safety pin to the end and pushing it through.

9. Make sure there are no twists in the elastic, then overlap the two ends by 1” and stitch together securely. You may want to overlap the ends, pin them, then try the skirt on to verify the fit before stitching.

10. Push the elastic completely into the casing and stitch the opening closed. Even out the gathers. Stitch vertically through the waistband at the side seams to prevent the elastic from rolling and twisting.

I’ve been a maker for as long as I can remember. If there’s a technique I haven’t tried, it’s probably on my to-do list. At my blog, Crafty Staci, I create beginner-friendly craft and sewing tutorials, simple recipes, and curate links to fun things to make. Sometimes people are hesitant to take that first step into making things. My goal is to guide and inspire them to jump in, and not be afraid to make mistakes along the way. I want to do my part to keep handmade alive and well!

I don’t usually make Halloween costumes, I just let my kids raid our ‘dress up box.’ But they are quickly outgrowing most of the costumes in the box and I happened to be at Joann’s with Cadie earlier this month when she found the McCalls Frozen pattern (MP370). Unfortunately I was already sewing like a chicken with her head cut off getting ready for Quilt Market, so had to put off the costume sewing until after I returned.

Ya’ll know I love to sew potholders. It’s the perfect way to use up fabric and batting scraps. And to practice quilting. Plus when you’re done you have a beautiful and useful item. Sometimes I give them away and (I admit) a lot of the time I keep them for myself. Having a cute potholder makes cooking bearable for me. Why only bearable? Because I’d much rather be sewing. 🙂

Love! Yes, I am so in love with my little matryoshka. She is the third in my set of 6 applique designs called ‘Far Away Forest’ that are inspired by Russian folk tales. There are three more coming, but this one is my favorite.

I’ve been sewing my kids swimsuits again… I do it every year. I don’t know why, but I enjoy it almost as much as sewing their underwear, lol.

We’re spending a lot of time in the Florida sun lately, so I decided to make rashguard shirts for my two kids that are most likely to burn.

Recently my daughter and I were going through our closets to see what things we had to wear this summer. We live in a hot and humid climate, and it can be hard to find things to wear that keep us cool and are still stylish. I’m not a huge fan of shorts and have always felt that skirts were a great alternative to shorts for the summer months.

I’ve gone through my fabric stash and have a big “to-do” list right now. I’ve sewn several women’s skirts in the past and am sharing some of my favorite patterns below. The circle skirts I created several years ago remain one of my favorite tutorials. I’ve also included on the list many skirt patterns that I’ve wanted to try for a while! A few of them are even skirts with pockets (yay for pockets!) If you make one of them, please let me know how it went in the comments section.

As a general rule, if you’d like to make a skirt for summer that is lightweight and easy to care for, I recommend the following fabrics.

Some of these skirt patterns do feature a zipper closure. A few feature an elastic pull-on waist. I would not recommend eliminating a pattern because of a zipper. Zippers are not hard to insert into skirts, and most patterns contain clear, easy-to-follow directions. I have found that skirt patterns with zipper closures fit better and are more flattering than elastic waist skirts.
