I’ve dreamed of interning at HBO since I was a junior in high school, but at the tender age of 17 I was far too inexperienced to work for a company of such caliber. Instead, I spent the next three summers navigating various kinds of internships, in hopes of building my resume and becoming an attractive candidate. Now, as a rising junior in college, I have been granted an amazing opportunity to be writing this article from my desk in HBO headquarters. It’s been a mere three weeks, but I have already been exposed to so much and still looking forward to what’s in store. On the very first day, as my fellow interns and I made our way up to the 15th floor, we were greeted by the smiling faces of the HR team. They engaged us in conversations about our favorite HBO shows, the location of the nearest Chick-Fil-A, and calmed our nerves about our first day in the office. But it isn’t just the HR Team—it’s everyone in the office! From the smiling security guards who greet me each day with a lighthearted “Good morning, ” to those who introduced me to green tea and sesame seed ice cream (surprisingly delicious) during my departmental meet & greet, to the talk with one employee about the importance of shows like

For young, black women like me, or the conversation I had with another during an in-office baby shower that reminded me that being an introvert does not mean I am not cut out for this industry; everyone here at HBO is ready and willing to learn more about you, introduce you to new experiences, and make your time here as fulfilling as possible. The culture at HBO is familial and nurturing. Here, it is okay to not know and ask questions and it is highly recommended that you seek out mentors. Furthermore, interns are granted a unique opportunity to network and collaborate with each other on Project HBO. The project calls for interns to gather research in order to help HBO continue to maintain its competitive advantage in the industry. Rarely are interns afforded a chance to contribute meaningful insight to a company like HBO and know that their thoughts will be taken into consideration. Though I always dreamed of working here, I never imagined that it would be an environment where even as an intern, I can see and feel the impact that my work is making at this company or that I could find such amazing mentors in such a short amount of time. I can’t wait to see what the rest of my internship holds!
