“Studying at the International Summer School was everything I hoped for and more! One of my favourite aspects was the lectures on Irish poetry, such as the work of W.B. Yeats and Seamus Heaney, who was from Northern Ireland and wrote a lot about his hometown and the landscapes around where he lived. We even got to visit his museum in Heaney’s hometown!

Conference And Event Services

All of the field trips were amazing, from the historic city of Derry-Londonderry to Stormont Parliament to the breathtaking Causeway Coast with its spectacular views. It was so hard to say goodbye, even though I only knew my classmates for four weeks, it feels like we’ve been friends for longer. Even though my four weeks in Belfast are now over I will never forget this amazing experience I’ve had. I may have said goodbye to Queen’s for now, but I have a feeling this won’t be the last time I visit!”The Queen’s Summer School 2023 offers international students a three-week introduction to the rich tapestry of historical, cultural, political, environmental, and socio-economic factors that combine to make Northern Ireland a unique place. This experiential programme will situate Queen’s, Belfast, and the north of Ireland within the key conversations that shape our wider world.

Not simply academic in scope, Queen’s 23 provides insights into the histories, locations, and future visions of Belfast and this part of Ireland by engaging with local people and visiting a range of political, historical and cultural sites. You will learn about our city and explore this country alongside peers from other international universities, drawn from across the world’s seven continents.

Week 1 will explore the entwined social, political, and historical realities of the city today, discovering multiple community perspectives on modern Ireland/Northern Ireland. By the end of this week students will understand the multiple ways we can use and interpret the past and differentiate between various discipline-centered conceptions of the past. We will provide students with a new or enhanced understanding of Queen’s University Belfast and the history of the institution within the Belfast city region. Students will be guided through a campus orientation and meet with the key members of staff and students delivering the summer 2023 programme. Students will be oriented to the city of Belfast and visit Derry-Londonderry.

Queen’s University is conveniently located in the heart of Belfast in Northern Ireland. Belfast is just a short flight from all other major UK cities, including London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Belfast is served by two airports, the George Best City Airport and Belfast International Airport. As Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom international students are advised to enter via a UK port of entry, where there are many connecting flights to Belfast from Great Britain and Europe.

For students from the USA or Canada your best option is to arrive at a Belfast airport (either direct or through a UK port of entry). If you arrive through Dublin, you can travel to Belfast. You must hold onto your boarding pass and transport ticket (bus/train) for evidence of your arrival date and should be aware that you may encounter issues if you fly in/out of Dublin again for weekend trips.

The climate of Northern Ireland is influenced most by the Atlantic Ocean. As a result, it doesn’t have the extreme temperatures that other countries at similar latitudes would have.

Our weather can be unpredictable, so we like to discuss it! So while the weather can be changeable – it’s rarely extreme. But do prepare for rain, as it’s called the Emerald Isle for a reason. The warmest months, July and August, get about 18 hours of daylight and it gets dark only after 11 pm.

Wondering what to bring for your three weeks in Northern Ireland? You’ll need to be adaptable! So go for layers that you can put on or take off as the temperature changes. Bring a sweater, even in summer; waterproofs to accompany all outdoor activities; sunglasses; comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella. Don’t be fooled into thinking you won’t need sunscreen in the summer months – when the sun shines in Northern Ireland it’s quite strong, so wear a high factor and bring a sun hat.

Northern Ireland uses the £ pound sterling, the currency also in circulation in England, Scotland and Wales. In the Republic of Ireland the currency is in Euro.
