. The Louds and Casagrandes families are featured in a wide range of stories set during the season, with a few crossovers.

The cover is a refreshing change of pace for Papercutz. Instead of the traditional front and generic back covers, it is a wraparound. It features (from left to right) Lola, Lucy, Luan, Leni, Lori, Lily, Lana, Lincoln, Lisa, Luna, and Lynn running on the beach. The logos and blurb surround the siblings. Sadly, the cover is yet again misleading as none of the included stories are even set at a beach.

, the “Meet the Loud Family (and Friends)” segment has been altered to align with the book’s theme. The Loud family, as well as Ronnie Anne, are shown in their beach attire. The rest is left unchanged from past releases, aside from the addition of two more characters from

. The text blurb for Ronnie Anne’s dad, Dr. Arturo Santiago, reveals that the Santiagos are divorced. The revelation is far more explicit than the show, where the word “divorce” has never been uttered.

Fifteen stories are included in this graphic novel; eight center around the Louds, four feature the Casagrande characters, and the remaining three are crossovers. Interestingly, while there is no overall narrative between stories, one of the gag stories “Lucy’s Summer Fashion Tips” serves as the set up to the proceeding narrative story “Doom and Bloom”, the only time any type of continuity shows up within this

Two stories tie for the book’s longest ones, “Even the Score” and “Tunnel the Mud”, both consisting of six pages. The former is a fun story about Lynn starting a new job and competing with her co-worker. The latter is the graphic novel’s most creative story reminiscent of the show’s pet-based episodes due to how much focus is given to Charles, the Loud family’s dog. It also features a visual element unique to the format, in which the white borders surrounding the panels transition to brown, reflecting the underground sequences.

Characters since said show’s crossover episode “Cursed!” On the other hand, “One Loud’s Trash…” focused on Bobby and Lori, a relationship the shows have mostly minimized due to the latter’s departure for college in the fifth season of

. No particular holidays are acknowledged but several tropes of the season are highlighted, such as being at a pool, having a summer job, and going to the country fair. In some cases, the season seems shoehorned into the stories, almost as if they could take place anytime other than the Summer.

The artwork is consistent with past graphic novels. There are a few oddities between stories, such as height inconsistencies and the characters’ heads at several points going off-model. A good example of both comes from the opening panel of the aforementioned “Tunnel”, in which the Loud family is portrayed to be much shorter than usual due to the oversimplified art style used for the comic.

The Loud House: Summer Special

Is an overall fun read. It features a lot more great stories centering around the Louds and Casagrandes. Despite the vagueness of the season’s setting, misleading cover art, and usual artwork flubs, this is worth checking out whether you are chilling at the beach or waiting for your flight.
